Chillies contain capsaicin, a colourless, pungent, crystalline compound that is the source of hotness in peppers. This substance has been used to relieve pain, improve circulation and treat psoriasis topically. Research shows that capsaicin can also stimulate the appetite and boost metabolism.
Chillies are a rich source of Vitamin C. A fresh, medium-sized green chilli pod, has as much Vitamin C as 6 oranges! Chillies can help in releasing phlegm, increase sweating, and build up resistance to colds. Pungent chillies are also an important gastro-intestinal detoxicant. But avoid consuming them on an empty stomach, or if you suffer from hyperacidity, as they can irritate the stomach lining.
